At this year’s Game Creators Conference, Konami shocked gamers with two major announcements. In the aftermath of Activision’s collaboration with Aerosmith on the new “Guitar Hero: Aerosmith”, Konami has collaborated with former country music star Billy Ray Cyrus to make “Dance Dance Revolution: Billy Ray Cyrus”. The new title will feature hit songs like Achy Breaky Heart, In the Heart of a Woman, and Throwin’ Stones.
Konami representative Shokichi Ishihara said “We wish to open up our popular Dance Dance Revolution franchise to American gamers overseas. Not everyone can enjoy the kind of songs you usually find in our franchise, so we wished to broaden our audience. What is more American than country music?”
Cyrus owes much of his recent popularity to his daughter Miley Cyrus who is more commonly known by her character name Hanna Montana. Shokichi goes on to say that, due to his deep roots with country music and having a long list of popular songs, they’ve already contracted two sequels for the soon to be released DDR game. The game will be released in the US exclusively, and while no platforms have been officially announced, it is expected to appear on all major home and hand-held consoles.
When asked about his recent endeavor with Konami, Billy Ray stated “What? What’s a konami?” Miley who was also present, giggling and blinking occasionally while staring into the camera.
Along with this, Kagemasa Kozuki had an unscheduled announcement of his own to make. The CEO of Konami said “I can’t take this anymore, I’m out of here. I am announcing my retirement from this company.”
When asked about leaving the company he helped start, he said, “I will not be able to live with myself if I have any part of this. [Dance Dance Revolution: Billy Ray Cyrus] is surely a sign that it is time to retire. This captain is not going down with this ship.”
Ishihara goes on to say, “Konami means small waves in our language, and we are subject to the force of larger more powerful forces in the sea. This new wave happens to be American country music and we just have to go our separate ways as the tides change. Kozuki has been with us since the beginning and he will be missed.”
Kozuki who had been with the company for 35 years had been battling an irrational fear of country music for several years. This paranoia is rumored to be linked to his failure to break into the industry in the early 70s and the alleged rape of his mother by a country music star.
